What does surrender look like?

I recently wrote a song called "Surrender". I was inspired by the Easter season to write a song, a lullaby to my Savior, Jesus. However, leading up to the song, I've been processing through what it means to truly surrender...

As Christians, we can encourage each other by saying, "Surrender it to Jesus." So, what does surrender truly look like? Do we often think we are surrendering, but in reality it's only a mental assent?

In my journey, I've been learning surrender takes two qualifications before it can begin to be a true reality: truly believing we are loved and entering into the rest of trust. Belief is the opening into the doorway of our hearts, and faith is how we grab hold of it.

We must believe we are truly loved by God

How many of us have heard the saying," the journey from our head to our heart can be the longest journey"? It is said a lot because it is true. Oftentimes, what we know in our head has not yet made it to our heart. "For God so loved the world, that he gave his only begotten Son that whosoever believes in him should not perish, but have everlasting life," John 3:16 - Do we believe this, truly, in our hearts?

This scripture is very personal. For God so loved me, that he gave me Jesus. When we enter into our relationship with Jesus, surrendering to his love for us is huge. There is nothing that can take us out of his hands. We get to walk daily learning his love for us and experience a personal relationship with him.

"I give them eternal life, and they shall never perish; no one will snatch them out of my hand. My Father, who has given them to me, is greater than all; no one can snatch them out of my Father’s hand. I and the Father are one.” John 10:28

If we believe our actions (our mess) cause God not to love us, and then he'll turn away from us, it is not possible to rest in his love. He loves us. So, he gave us his son and we enter into his eternal life by faith. That's why scripture encourages us to enter into his rest on multiple occasions.

"Let us labour therefore to enter into that rest, lest any man fall after the same example of unbelieF" HEBREWS 4:11

How do we "fall" after the same example of unbelief? We fall from faith, when we don't believe his work is truly finished. He loves us and his spirit will never leave us, once we receive his gift of salvation. Even in all our mess, he loves us! We can rest in the security of his love and the finality of the gift of salvation.

We must completely trust God

Only after knowing we are truly loved, can we enter into into complete trust. Trusting in his finished work of salvation in us and also trusting in his plans for our lives. That's if, we truly believe he cares enough to have plans for our lives...

"For I know the plans I have for you,” declares the LORD, “plans to prosper you and not to harm you, plans to give you hope and a future." Jeremiah 29:11

It's amazing to know that God has plans for our lives and those plans are good! We can trust him with the big details, and little details of our lives.

Do we truly trust him to direct our path? This is a question I continually ask of myself...

“Trust in the Lord with all thine heart; and lean not unto thine own understanding. In all thy ways acknowledge him, and he shall direct thy paths.” Proverbs 3:5-6

We've got to trust the Lord with all our heart. Then, we can begin to let him direct our path. How do we not lean on our own understanding? For me, it's been a daily walk of putting his Word first. If my thoughts and understandings are contradictive to what the Bible clearly says, then I've got to reevaluate what I am believing. I lay those understandings and beliefs down, and I pick up what the Word says.

And, don't forget, we have a personal relationship with him! So, we have the privilege of talking to him daily and hearing his voice. In all our ways acknowledge him, and we can expect him to direct our path.

So, I challenge you: Do you believe God loves you? Do you truly trust him with all the details of your life?

Once our rest in his love for us is complete, and our belief in his direction is certain, we can surrender. Surrender is such a blessing. Letting go of the all burdens and all the things that weigh us down is absolutely freeing! The fact that we don't have to carry the burden of figuring out our lives, is life-changing. It truly is a new life!

So, Lord, Your Kingdom come...your will to be done in my life!

SURRENDER

Your grace is overwhelming

Your heart too much to contain

And, each new day you remind me

Your love for me will never fade

This is my full surrender now

No longer holding anything back

This is my full heart given now

In all its mess, do what you will

You’re drowning out all my fears with your love

And, by my weakness I am made strong

Your ways are not my own

They’re higher than my heart has known

This is my full surrender now

No longer holding anything back

This is my full heart given now

In all its mess, do what you will

You hold all of creation in the palm of your hand

You speak a word and all obey

But still you came down as servant

Tasted death so I could live

This is my full surrender now

No longer holding anything back

This is my full heart given now

In all its mess, do what you will

Your Kingdom come

Your will be done

This is my full surrender

No longer holding back

This is my full heart given

Even in all the mess

Do what you will

Your Kingdom come...
